Transbay Transit Center – VersiCell in SF’s Upcoming Park

We were thrilled to see the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle Newspaper on April 12 (online April 11), featuring the Transbay Transit Center currently being built in busy downtown San Francisco. The Transbay Transit Center is more than just a rooftop park, it will be a huge city park at 5.4 acres and a quarter of a mile long, within one of the busiest city sections on the West Coast.

Tournesol Siteworks is thoroughly involved in this high profile project, as 192, 000 sq. ft  our VersiCell sub-surface drainage panels were specified by PWP Landscape Architecture. In the SF Chronicle article titled “Transbay Transit Center rooftop turning into 5.4-acre City Park,” writer J.K. Dineen states,

The Transbay Transit Center is set to open late this year and will serve numerous bus lines, including AC Transit, Muni, Golden Gate Transit and Greyhound. It’s still unknown when it might connect to high-speed rail or Caltrain, which will operate the station, how much it will cost to operate, or what shops and restaurants will occupy the 100,000 square feet of retail space.

…But what is known is this: Tree by tree, San Francisco’s next significant public open space, a 5.4-acre green rooftop boxed in by towers of glass, is taking shape atop the transit center. And amid all the questions about the future of the transit center, it is the park — with its carefully curated collection of flora — that has the potential to make the project an attraction in the years before the trains arrive.

Our Versicell drainage panels were installed by contractors from McGuire and Hester out of Alameda, CA, just across the bay from San Francisco. VersiCell is a sub-surface drainage panel that provides the ultimate combination of strength and water flow capacity. The modular, connectable panels are frequently used in a variety of installations where fast, high-volume water flow is critical. In addition to sub-surface drainage, VersiCell is frequently used in place of heavy gravel aggregates for waterproofing membrane protection, for heat and sound insulation on structures, as a drainage channel, and on subterranean walls to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup.

A 1-acre Public Park, 11 Stories Up!

Philadelphia, PA, recently welcomed its first elevated public park, Cira Green. This project was recently featured on Greenroof.com as their “Project of the Week” post. Cira Green, a 1.25 acre urban park, is located 11 stories above street level and is part of a larger mixed-use development project in the Cira Centre South neighborhood in the University City District.

The park offers much needed open public green space with amazing views of the Philadelphia skyline and the Schuylkill Riverfront. Cira Green is also Philadelphia’s first blue-green roof, which can route storm water to the green roof areas.

Designed by Roofmeadow, a national designer of high-profile greenroof projects, Cira Green has a unique water storage system underneath its sloping lawn, swaying meadows and the pavers on the roof. That’s where Tournesol Siteworks comes in!

At the beginning of the project, Roofmeadow specified 33,800 square feet of our VersiCell Drainage Panels to be placed underneath the greenroof. Sean’s Landscaping, Inc., the landscape contractor. installed the roof, stacked 30mm VersiCell two layers high at 16,900 sq. ft. per layer to create a 2-1/4” deep reservoir below the greenroof.

The rigid VersiCell panels provide the ultimate combination of strength and high volume water flow capacity, especially when fast water-flowing is critical. Made of 100% recycled polypropylene, VersiCell rigid panels are highly inert, and won’t break down or crush over the life of a project. This is the same product recently used on the Whitney Museum terraces in NYC.

The New Whitney Museum of American Art

The Whitney Museum of American Art recently opened in a new building located in the Meatpacking District of lower Manhattan, New York, on the Hudson and at the southern entrance to HighLine Park (which Tournesol also participated in). The iconic museum was designed by architects Renzo Piano Building Workshop, with Henshell and Buccellato, Consulting Architects, out of New Jersey.

The roof decks and visual ambiance of the building are simple and elegant, creating a fresh and vibrant usable space. However, water is no friend of the art inside the building, so strength and maximum water flow was of utmost importance to the designers and engineers. The broad terraces of the building collect large amounts of water, which needs to be effectively drained and kept from the building envelope.

The installing roofing contractor, Eagle One Roofing from Queens, used our high-performance VersiCell Drainage Panels in a vertical and slanted orientation as a high-capacity drainage channel at the edge of the deck, between the substructure and the building envelope.

Other drainage products compress over time, but the sub-surface VersiCell Drainage Panels are non-compressible, high-strength drainage panels. The panel’s durable open structure provided assurance to design professionals that water won’t collect where it shouldn’t.

Seriously! We’ve acquired the assets of Vespro Inc. of Northern California, the manufacturer of Root Solutions root barrier. While many of our products are decorative (pots, planters, site furnishings), quite a few are more functional (container irrigation, planter liners, living wall systems). The root barrier product fits perfectly into the functional part of our line – a locally-manufactured product sold primarily to landscape contractors, by our existing distributors, and specified by our design partners.

It’s been a few weeks since my last post. In the meantime, I was down in Singapore visiting with our partners at Elmich. We started out working with them on the VGM system, and are looking to expand the number of products we share.  We were visiting several installations that used their product when they suggested we go visit the Marina Barrage project. Their VersiCell sub-surface drainage product was used underneath the intensive green roof on this high-profile job.

I had seen the standard beauty shot of the project, and thought it looked pretty cool. I was told that it was a pumping station/dam for the city.  Going online, I found the following:

Conceptualised and managed by PUB, the national water agency of Singapore, the Marina Barrage spans the southern end of the Marina Channel, which opens out into the sea. More than just an ordinary dam, the Barrage is a unique engineering masterpiece that fulfills three purposes for Singapore. It boosts Singapore’s water supply by creating Singapore’s 15th reservoir and its first reservoir in the city centre. The barrage also acts as a tidal barrier to alleviate flooding in the low-lying parts of the city such as Chinatown and Little India.

The guys commented that it was a national holiday that day, so it would be pretty busy. I thought – “busy? a pumping station?”.
