Refreshing the Doubletree Hotel & Conference Center, Chesterfield, MO

Friday, May 18th, 2012

All photos courtesy Farthingale Ornamentals

We just recieved images of a recent installation at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Conference Center St. Louis. It really illustrates how sprucing up an existing property with new pots & planters can give a place a “pop”.  The facility offers 223 rooms and 37 meeting/banquet rooms.  The hotel is actually located in Chesterfield, MO, the largest city in west Saint Louis County with a population of just under 50,000.

Don Hellstern of Farthingale Ornamental & Architectural Stone in Kansas City is a local distributor of Tournesol Siteworks products, and was kind enough to send along these images. Don worked closely with Fred Kovar of the Harrick Group in Chicago, a respected firm specializing in the  design of hotel projects nationally.  Fred called out an unusual custom color for the Urban Tall pots (see this post for more Urban Tall), “Parrot Orange”.  We received a sample, and were able to match the color.

"Parrot Orange" certainly pops against the background

The Urban Tall

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

Mi Dia restaurant patio, Dallas, TX

In 2008 we fabricated a custom Urban planter for a retail mall project in Florida. The planter was designed to hide bollards, so was designed specifically to be the same size as our 24″ square, but 48″ tall.  Once that project was complete, we adapted the tool for our own use – and the Urban Tall planter was born.

The pot is something of a “red-headed stepchild”.  It is has different proportions than the rest of the Urban Collection, and so only garners one line in our marketing materials. Nevertheless, it has become one of our more popular planters.  Although it doesn’t get much attention, we felt it deserves it’s own post.

The planters in the image above and below were specified & installed by GHA Architecture/Development of Dallas, TX. The Mi Dia From Scratch restaurant, and the neighboring Winewood Restaurant (both located in Grapevine) used the URT-2400 with our CWC-R1850 container irrigation self-watering insert.  All the containers were delivered in the T-0 texture in black.

(also of Irvine), was purchased dircectly by the owner (Madison Marquette) and installed by general contractor JM Stitt.

New 2012 Quick Ship planter program

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

The Urban Collection, shown at the Hyatt Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale, AZ

In response to a number of requests from customers last year, we’re implemented a quick ship program for 2012.  With the way that we typically work, it’s hard to get a pot order, even a small one, out in less than a week.  This year, we decided to put in place a program that will make it possible! Best of all, there will be no additional cost for this service.

The quick ship program features two of our most popular FRP (fiberglass) planter collections, the Urban and Metro. Limited quantities of most rounds, squares and rectangles will be available to ship within 5-7 business days, depending upon the final color and finish.  Metal infused finishes will  typically take slightly longer than base or MMP finishes. Confirmed ship dates will depend upon order size and current inventory levels.

This existence of this program in no way guarantees a specific delivery window to any customer. Check with your Tournesol salesperson for product availability and specific details.

Downtown and Wilshire Collection planters, The Clark Hotel, Los Angeles

We recently worked with Syntax Builders on the pool deck of the Clark Hotel. This historic hotel in the heart of downtown L.A. was built in 1913, and known for most of its years as the Hotel Clark. The current owners are adding a pool and lounge area, and reopening the building as a 350-room hotel.

They will be part of our Urban and Wilshire Collections, two of our best selling products.

A combination of square and rectangular Urban Pots

The work at 5550 Wilshire Blvd., in the heart of  Los Angele’s Miracle Mile district, was one of our largest projects of the year. With over 180 pots, in both GFRC and FRP fiberglass, as well as container irrigation for them all, it kept our manufacturing facility busy for some time.  The landscape design for this project was done by Valleycrest Design Group of Orange County (formerly HRP Studio)  for the developer Legacy Partners.  We worked closely with ParkWest Landscape, who handled the entire project. Ten-Fifty B St., San Diego – a LEED-Gold Affordable Housing High-Rise

UR-3600 square planters in bronze finish

This high-rise near downtown San Diego, owned by Affirmed Housing Group and built by Turner Construction, was never supposed to be a customer of ours.  According to our regional sales representative Jon Willingham, the client had already purchased a significant number of planters from a local manufacturer when Turner and the landscape contractor Benchmark Landscape gave us a call.  The unwanted planters were stacked in a corner of the project when he arrived…

Urban Collection planters after installation

The designer of this project, located in suburban Los Angeles, made the most of a small space with tight weight restrictions.  By mixing the modern-feeling Urban Collection planters, large stone mulching, and plant selection, DWLA landscape architects created a modern minimalist feel, getting the most out of the green in the project.
