It’s Tuesday – where am I??

Roofdecks at the CCDC project (using our planter liners), Washington DC

“Why do all the industry trade shows get stacked on top of one another?”, I found myself thinking after ten days on the road. The last six weeks have been full of travel & conferences – Bond MultiFamily (a meetup of architects & product manufacturers specializing in multi-family residential construction) in April, followed by the mid-year meeting of the Landscape Architecture Foundation in Washington DC in early May.  The photo above was taken of the CCDC project in Washington during the LAF meeting. We provided planter liners for the roofdeck gardens for this spectacular project – we’ll feature it in a blog post soon.

HD Expo
Visiting with designers at the HD Expo in Las Vegas – the South Chair in white, the Pillow Chair in orange

From there it was on to trade shows – Over the past two weeks we’ve exhibited at the American Institute of Architects National Convention (Atlanta), the Hospitality Design Expo (Las Vegas), the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (in New York with our partners from Luxxbox), and finally RECon (Las Vegas), the exhibition of the Intenational Council of Shopping Centers.

We met with well over 500 architects, interior designers, landscape architects and shopping center owners/managers.  There’s nothing like listening to your existing and potential customers – enlightening, to say the least.

Some of the highlights from the shows:

The South Chair and the Pillow Chair (see photo below). Both come in bright, interesting colors which grab designer’s attention. We knew that bright colors were in – but this confirmed it. While very different in execution, they herald our entrance into the cafe and casual furniture business.

Combine wood with brightly colored metal or concrete and people will notice it. Our Boulevard wood, whether in planters, furnishings or flooring, was the clear star of the show. The sustainable story, combined with its natural good looks makes it easy to get excited about.

We’ve traditionally found our “sweet spot” with landscape architects.  Nevertheless, architects have been showing greater interest in the range of products we offer – especially living walls, wood decking and pedestals, Wilshire Box hanging planters and VersiCell drainage panel.  Being at the AIA convention was a great experience this year.

A surprise from this series of shows was the number of commercial interior designers that actively specify products in our markets. We met several that have specified us in the past (especially in the hospitality business), and most really like the work we do. It was a great reminder that our reach is sometimes greater than we think!

Cincinnati Home & Garden

Spring is here and so are the Home & Garden shows! Our friends at Green Streets Environmental Services were excited to be involved in this year’s Cincinnati Home & Garden Show.  As a founding partner in The Sustainability Partnership of Cincinnati (TSPC), they are a leader in green build and construction – from LEED and Passive Architecture through finished construction.

For his year’s conference, Green Streets and TSPC worked up a full sustainably-minded garden and eco house. The “Milky Way Garden and Star Powered Home” name given by partner Lohre & Associates of Cincinnati, was designed with input from all of the partners. “This has really helped spark imagination” said Tre Sheldon, one of the principles at Green Streets.

Filled with sustainable materials, and unique idea’s, the visitors could see solar panels, raised planters, green roofs, and living walls. The living wall used our VGM modular wall unit, and was designed and installed by Green Streets Environmental Services with special help from the West Hills Green Houses also of Cincinnati. “The versatility, durability, and design of Tournsol’s products are truly the very best on the market today” said Benjamin Haggerty of Green Streets. He went on to say “be it an interior or exterior application, we won’t work with any other supplier then Tournsol for Living Walls, there just isn’t anything better”. Thanks, Benjamin, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

Since 1969, Cincinnati has welcomed Hart Productions Home & Garden show as a right of spring and a unique oasis that help’s shake off those winter blues. Tens of thousands come through annually to tour unique gardens and see the latest offerings and most innovative products from all over the world. Thanks to Green Streets for including Tournesol Siteworks this year!

Partnerships – from our Feb. email blast

The first few months of 2014 have found us involved in quite a few conferences, workshops, training and sales meetings.  It’s great to be out contributing to these events. Our business, and just as importantly, our industry benefits from these valuable partnerships.

Our year always starts off in Boston. Regional Sales Representative Brian Mitalo braved the polar vortex to attend New England Grows in collaborations with our local partner BISCO . It’s a great event that always sets the tone for the year. Not only do we get the chance to educate the local landscape community about what’s new, we also get to check the pulse on the New England market – find out who’s doing what! With heavy snow on day one, most contractors were out plowing – but day two turned out great. Boston is excited for our new Boulevard Wood Tiles !

We were graciously invited again this year to our long-time distribution partner Ewing Irrigationfor their Employee Development Leadership Conference. This year they made it a trade show format, and close to 40 vendors attended this continuing education program for their staff. It was a great opportunity to share our new VGP tray-based living wall system and Root Solutions root barrier product with them. It was quite an event – they made sure each person visted every booth (over 300 people in all).

Just last week we were invited by Valleycrest Landcape Development , one of the largest landscape companies in the world, to present at their Chief Estimator’s Summit. We were in exclusive company – one of just a few companies invited. While we always enjoy sharing our products and experience, this was a great learning experience for us as well. Regional Sales Representative Jon Willingham and Chris Lyon were able to spend time and get the unique perspective that they have to the market.

Speaking of partnerships, we’ve had a great one going over the years with Brigham Young University . For almost 20 years, we have worked with Bruce Maw, the Landscape Architect for the university, on major  projects  and architectural revisions to their magnificent campus in the Utah Valley. With nearly 640 acres under his purview, he has the drive  to create unique spaces throughout the campus, and we are honored to be able  to help him achieve his vision.

photo 3

During a recent visit to the campus, we noticed that our Craftsman Collection  were used in their new visitors center. The metal infused, “hand-hammered” copper mimics the intent of arts-and-craft master, Dirk van Erp, on whose work the collection was based. Prior to this installation, our aluminum metal-infused Wilshire planters were used at the expansion of the Marriott School of Management building.

Next up is the new Life Sciences building. Tournesol Siteworks will be providing a number of planters to be used on the rooftop level.  The $950-million dollar project is due to open in the fall of 2014, and will represent a new anchor to southern end of the campus with 265,000 feet of classroom, state-of-the-art lab facilities, auditorium and atrium. We’ve worked with Bruce and his staff for a long time, and we’re always excited when an opportunity like this happens on campus.

Our 2014 Lookbook & Catalog dropped on Feb 12.  Not to be missed is one of our favorite fresh items  – The Harlie Collection planter. Sticking with our theme of partnerships, this planter comes to us by way of our new collaboration with Australian designer,  Luxxbox . This faceted shape draws on gemology and mathematical principles with a playful edge.

Altogether, the catalog features over 20 new products and all our product categories – Site Furnishings, Pots & Planters, Deck & Paver Supports, Green Walls & Roofs, Container Irrigation and Root Control & Drainage.  You also find technical information, complete product listings, material finishes and gorgeous installation images. If you missed out on receiving one, please send us an emailcatalog@tournesolsiteworks.com. Alternately, you can download a copy  tournesolsiteworks.com/uploads/cmsfiles/Tournesol_Siteworks_2014.pdf .

In addition, we encourage you to look for our ad placements with media partners, Landscape Architecture  and Architectural Record . Each month we  highlight a unique product, and invite you to “explore your options” with Tournesol Siteworks.

ASLA 2012 in Phoenix

We just returned from this year’s edition of the American Soc. of Landscape Architects annual meeting & expo in Phoenix.  Attendance seemed light this year, especially to the vendors standing around on the trade show floor between 11AM (after sessions started) and 3PM (once they were over). It did feel like the attendees we spoke with were busier than in previous years, and cautiously optimistic about the coming 12 months.

Hanging with Kraft Gardens at the 2011 TPIE in Ft. Lauderdale

All pictures courtesy of Kraft Gardens

I got a call in December from Kevin Kraft of Kraft Gardens in Ft. Pierce, FL. He was working on the layout of their booth for this year’s TPIE, and he wanted to show their plants vertically. Living walls are one of the hot new topics for their interiorscape customers, and its a good way to showcase some of his plants. As one of the premier nurseries for commercial-quality plants in the country, we knew that they would do a good job with the display.  It doesn’t hurt that their booth is the first you see when you walk in the show, and that they positioned the TerraScreen front and center.

Upcoming January Tradeshows Part 2 – New England Grows (Boston) and MidAm (Chicago)

The MidAm trade show is the premier winter landscape show in the MidWest.  Held in Chicago at Navy Pier, it will take place Jan. 19-21.  We’ll be well represented this year at the booth of our local distributor-partner Midwest Trading, along with our local sales representative Brian Mitalo.  Midwest Trading will have a 4-module Tournesol VGM modular living wall on display (similar to the one at the Garfield Park Conservatory), as well as our FRP fiberglass containers and irrigation inserts.  They are in booth 1117 – it will be hard to miss, as they have one of the larger booths, together with their partner company Midwest Groundcover.

The New England Grows conference will be held on Feb. 2-4 at the Boston Exhibition and Convention Center. Our local distributor-partner, Bisco Irrigation, has become a valued resource for landscape contractors and designers using Tournesol Siteworks products in New England.  They will be in booth 2423.

They’ll have a wide variety of Tournesol products on hand, including our planters, irrigation, VGM modular living wall, VertiGreen Hybrid and VertiGreen trellis systems, and a recently added TerraScreen interior greenwall system. This is your opportunity to check out the products that you’ve seen in pictures, and ask questions of our sales representative Brian Mitalo.

Upcoming January Trade Shows – Landscape Industry Show (Los Angeles) and UtahGreen (Salt Lake City)

It’s trade show time again! Most landscape associations have their conferences and trade shows during the winter, primarily because their membership base isn’t terribly busy at that time of year.  Being a national supplier means that we display at many different shows – usually together with our local distributor-partners.  This year is no different

Our largest national partner, Ewing Irrigation, exhibited a large, planted Tournesol VGM modular living wall at the most recent Irrigation Association show in Phoenix. They will be featuring the same wall at booth #1239 at the upcoming Landscape Industry Show, sponsored by the California Landscape Contractors Association in Los Angeles on Jan. 12 & 13th.  Tournesol’s Southern California sales representative Jon Willingham will be on hand for most of the show to answer questions about the product.

They will also have the wall at their booth at the UtahGreen conference (sponsored by the Utah Nursery & Landscape Assoc.), taking place on Jan. 25-26 at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy.  Our Mountain States representative Ed Mathieu of Water Logic will be on hand. This is a great opportunity to see how the living wall system works for yourself!

Tournesol to participate on greenwall performance panel at Citiesalive in Vancouver

The Citiesalive conference starts tomorrow in Vancouver. If you’re there, make sure to attend the “On the roof with…” panel discussion during Session 4, at 4:45 on Thursday in the West Meeting Room 121-122. The topic, “Green Walls From Promise to Performance – Issues and Opportunities Looking Forward” is one that we consider vitally important to the continuing development of the living wall marketplace.  Continue reading Tournesol to participate on greenwall performance panel at Citiesalive in Vancouver
