Introducing the next generation VGM Modular living wall – VGM3

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

The new VGM3 module

Tournesol Siteworks has been working closely with our partner Elmich in Singapore to bring you the next generation of VGM modular living wall – the VGM3.  For those who have worked with VGM in the past, you’ll find the great features that made VGM a superior living wall solution (availability in 4″ and 8″ soil profiles, ease of removal/installation, open planting space, recycled materials) are all still there.

We’re not content to rest on our laurels – we want the best system to be better, at a lower overall installed cost!

Mario Batali is at it again!  One of our most popular blog topics last year was the installation of an edible living wall at Pizzeria Mozza’s first store in Los Angeles (see posts here and here and here). He and partner Joe Bastianich have expanded their Pizzeria Mozza concept, putting in their second store in Newport Beach, CA. The success of the Tournesol VGM edible living wall at the first store convinced them to make it a motif at the second.

New Continuing Education Course: Green Walls – Integrating Nature into Buildings

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Tournesol Siteworks is sponsoring a new CEU course, presented by McGraw-Hill at their Construction.com website.  We’ve spent the last three years talking about living walls to architects, landscape architects and designers. There has always been a huge interest in the topic, and we thought it would be worthwhile to expand our own efforts to teach the design community.

The course, written by Peter J. Arsenault, FAIA, NCARB, LEED-AP, incorporates both living wall and green facade topics. It draws inspiration as well from the Living Walls 101 Course developed by the Green Roofs for Healthy Cities organization.  McGraw-Hill has indicated that there has been strong interest in the course so far, even without much promotion!

We’d love any feedback you might have about the value the course, and the corresponding CEU credit has for you. From our understanding, all AIA approved CEU courses are also eligible for ASLA CEU credits, and even USGBC LEED credits.  Let us know what you think.

Flowers are blooming on the residential living wall

It’s been a little over 6 months since Michelle Bond of Thumbellina Gardens in San Francisco installed this living wall in her client’s back yard. You can see details of the installation here. She recently forwarded us updated images of the wall, and gave us more details about what kinds of maintenance she’s doing. It seemed like a good time to revisit the project in a new post.

Residential VGM modular living wall, all photos courtesy Michelle Bond of Thumbellina Gardens

Many of our customers looking at the Tournesol VGM modular living wall system intend on using it for commercial installations. This is a wonderful example of what it can do in a residential setting. The design, by Michelle Bond of Thumbellina Gardens in San Francisco, covers the back wall of a back yard at the bottom of a large hill. This installation was one of the best-documented that we’ve seen, and we’re fortunate that Michelle shared her images with us.  Click to continue »

VGM Living Wall accenting a terrace over a reflecting pool

One of the first VGM Living Wall projects we sold went to this beautiful residential project in Beverly Hills. Designed by the firm of Rios Clemente Hale, it was a solution to creating a green wall behind a reflecting pool underneath a lovely terrace.  Installed by James Cowan & Assocs., the wall looks as good (if not better) today than the day it went in. More images and description after the jump…

VGM modular living wall at the Summer Terrace exhibit

We were fortunate to be able to work with the US Botanic Garden, located on the Capitol Mall in Washington, D.C., this year on their Summer Terrace exhibit.  One of the elements that they had planned for the project was to build the facade of a home, demonstrating the look of a living wall in a residential application.
