Unique VGM wall in Southern California

Cool VGM living wall installation uses the boxes' modularity

When it comes to creativity, the designers we work with have us here at Tournesol Siteworks beat hands down.  Architect Ross Andrews and Landscape Architect Jim Ridge came up with this design for a small living wall installed on a retail center in Fountain Valley, CA. Instead of viewing the modularity of the VGM system as a drawback, they leveraged the geometry to create something quite spectacular.

Installed by Matsunaga Landscape Maintenance, and grown in by our friends at Instant Jungle, this wall adds pop to an otherwise bland area.  The one column reaches all the way to the ground, which allows irrigation to be run up behind it. As the wall grows in, the variation in plant material’s colors will containue to add to the effect. A great installation, and one that shows what creativity can do on a budget.

I was fortunate enough to run into Fran Schreibman, Director of Sales for Blondie’s Treehouse at a recent conference. She was the person responsible for the VertiGreen Hybrid trellis project that Blondie’s installed last spring/summer at a Whole Foods store in Lake Grove, NY. We profiled the installation here and here. It was one of the first VertiGreen Hybrid jobs – in fact, they purchased several of our prototype units because that’s what we had in stock at the time! She shared several images of the wall taken this summer, and much info about how it survived the winter. Click to continue »

Second Look - Rolling Stone Lounge in Los Angeles

Last year we provided product to the Rolling Stone Lounge, located in the retail area at Hollywood and Highland in Los Angeles. Our product was primarily used to screen a dining area on a walkway that gets very heavy foot traffic. We documented the project at the time in this blog post. One of the most important ways to judge our product is not how it appears immediately after installation, but how it holds up to everyday use over time. Click to continue »

Tournesol Container Irrigation in the Frontgate catalog

Design for custom irrigation insert for Frontgate

It’s been some time since we’ve had a product other than our Flower Framer windowboxes sold in the retail arena. We were delighted to be approached by Frontgate (a division of Cinmar), who were looking for a container irrigation insert to sell along with an exclusive pot this year. They were able to fit our standard CWC-1300 and CWC-1600 irrigation inserts to several pots that they offer, but had something special in mind for their feature product this Spring. They wanted a custom size for a large, square woven planter.

Wilshire Collection trash receptacle and ash tray at Nordstrom, Santa Monica

We supplied Wilshire Collection planters, trash receptacles and ash trays for the brand new Nordstrom store at the Santa Monica Place shopping center at the end of the Santa Monica 3rd St. Promenade. If you’ve ever been around the promenade, you’ll know the kind of foot traffic this gets – it is probably one of the higher-traffic locations we’ve ever done (and that includes 34th St. in NYC!). We worked with the Callison Partnership, who chose the FRP planters in our Iron Metal Matched Paint.  Click to continue »

Wilshire Collection Planters and VertiGreen Trellis

The Whole Foods Market, which is just opening today in Huntington Beach, CA, wanted an al fresco dining terrace in front of their store. The designer,  Courtney Le Architects, had a concept that replaced a simple fence to separate the outdoor patio from the walkway/parking area with a barrier using planters and trellis.  More images after the jump…

A combination of square and rectangular Urban Pots

The work at 5550 Wilshire Blvd., in the heart of  Los Angele’s Miracle Mile district, was one of our largest projects of the year. With over 180 pots, in both GFRC and FRP fiberglass, as well as container irrigation for them all, it kept our manufacturing facility busy for some time.  The landscape design for this project was done by Valleycrest Design Group of Orange County (formerly HRP Studio)  for the developer Legacy Partners.  We worked closely with ParkWest Landscape, who handled the entire project. More info and images after the jump…
