We were recently sent images by our friends at Plantscapes in Seattle, who just completed the installation of this TerraScreen living wall. It is part of a “workplace lab” for a very large software company in Seattle. They are continually updating the way that they structure their workspaces, and invited Plantscapes to install a living wall as a demonstration project. In addition to what you see above, they will be installing a custom one-row TerraScreen panel on the endcap, to complete the wrap-around look. They wanted to leave the end exposed initially so that the employees could understand how the system works.
More images after the break.
The “workplace lab” sets the tone for the worldwide offices for this software giant, and they wanted to incorporate a “nature indoors” element into their “super functional open meeting space”. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but according to the brief that they used to define the task:
- Plants decrease employee stress and enhance productivity by 12%
- Plants contribute oxygen in “Green Building” programs.
- Plants in the workplace help attract and retain today’s selective employee.
- The aesthetic value of plantscaping is the primary ROI for plant investments.
- Plantscaping helps create energy efficiency without Sick Building Syndrome
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. You can view an article about recent research into plants in the workplace environment here, and see a full summary of research at the Green Plants for Green Buildings website.
Plantscapes sent us the image below, showing the installed wall prior to putting the plants up. You can see the details of the TerraScreen irrigation system, which allows all 35 plants to be watered in about 3-1/2 minutes using a standard water-machine. With the type of plants that they’ve selected, there shouldn’t be a lot of maintenance required. You’ll note on the finished image above that they also incorporated a drainage basin on each side. While there shouldn’t be any dripping or overflow from the irrigation system (it’s been designed with interiors in mind), it is better safe than sorry in a place as wired as this.

The dividing wall looks great.
